Speakers:

Calvin Sandborn

For twenty years Calvin Sandborn was the Legal Director of the UVic Environmental Law Centre, and worked with students to protect the environment.  Before that, he worked at West Coast Environmental Law and the Forest Practices Board.  His work with students, citizens and First Nations contributed to:

• banning single-use plastics and flame retardants

• the doubling of protected areas across BC

• massive expansion of Indigenous Guardian programs

• stopping old growth logging and falcon harvesting

• tougher regulations on pesticides, mining and oil and gas

• workers compensation benefits for farm workers

• stopping proposed mines, smelters, plastics plants, etc.

• cleanup orders for old mines, such as the one at Jordan River

• the cleanup of contaminated Indigenous shellfish beaches

• fighting greenwashing ads – fining Keurig coffee in a famous case, and suing the gas industry for misleading ads.

Most important of all, Sandborn has mentored hundreds of young people to work to protect the environment.  See: “Calvin Sandborn’s optimism and passion inspires generations of environmental lawyers” at: https://www.focusonvictoria.ca/reporting/80/

Sandborn’s talk is entitled “Advice to the Young in a World OnFire”.  He will talk about how two Victoria high school students played a key role in achieving the federal single use plastics ban – and the many other things young people can do to protect our common future.

Carol Bruce

I first realized I was a firmly committed environmentalist when I was in my first year of university at UVic and my geography professor was explaining how the earth needed significant help even way back in what was, 1970!  I mentally committed myself to doing whatever I could.  Fifty three years later I still feel just as committed.  At the present time in Colwood I am chair of an environmental group,’ Citizens’ Environment Network in Colwood’, (CENIC), that has as its mission: “to encourage and support climate action and a sustainable environment in Colwood”.  We work to share our ideas with the City of Colwood and support and encourage their actions towards these goals. I began the organization  four years ago.  I look forward to sharing some of the ideas about CENIC at our table here today.

I am also the coordinator of another environmental group in Colwood called, The Friends of Havenwood Park (FOHP).  For the last 10 years we have been working in Havenwood Park on Veterans Memorial Parkway to remove invasive plants in the park.  We meet each Friday throughout the year and work for two hours in various locations.  The City of Colwood and Habitat Acquisition Trust are both sponsors of FOHP.  We are always looking for new members so please come and speak to me at our table if you are interested in joining our group in Colwood.   I will be showing a PowerPoint of the park so you will see the natural beauty we are trying to protect.
